Steampunk

Steampunk self-portrait. Watercolour, tempera and ink on paper.

I have liked the idea of steampunk ever since I first saw the cover of the ELP album Tarkus. I was maybe 12 then. I didn’t understand much of the music, but I remember being impressed by the really weird idea of battling semi-organic animals on the inner sleeve.

To me, the marriage of man and machine has always been a horrifying and fascinating idea. Robocop, Iron Man, some of Frank Miller’s earlier work, even Asimov’s robot stories – they all have the same kind of feel to them. Sacrilege, immense power, loss of humanity. Dark, enjoyable. A new take on the story of Icarus.
